Advent Calendar

Kia ora! Welcome back to this week’s blog post.

It’s officially Advent!

On December 1st Advent began.

We have been learning about what Advent is and we also have tasks about Advent too.

Our first task was to see what we already know about Advent and I wrote, Advent is when days are being counted down until Jesus’ birthday day.

This week I am going to blog about my second task which is to make an Advent calendar but instead of gifts we write about how we can help others and we do them everyday until Jesus’ birthday.

Here is my work.

What are you going to do for Advent?

Word Cloud

Kia Ora and welcome back to this weeks blog post.

This week since I have finished my book of The boy in the Stripped Pyjamas we had to make a word Cloud with words that relate about the book or were in the book since we have read about them for 5 weeks.

Some of the words I have are the names of people in the book like: Bruno, Gretel, Shmuel. I added the title in there but its all separated, what country that they were from.

Here is my work

If you have finished the book what do you think about it?

The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas

Kia ora! Welcome back to this weeks blog post.

For the past few weeks we got to choose a book to read for reading, the options were: Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas, Eagle in the snow, Holes, Book thief, Percy Jackson. I chose Boy in the Stripped pyjamas because I have already done Holes. This book is about a boy named Bruno who was German whose father was a commandant and Bruno has a best friend named Shmuel who was trapped on the other side of the fence.

Something I really enjoyed about this book is Bruno and Shmuel bonding and forming a friendship when there both on different sides of the fence at the end though they both die and it was very sad.

For our slides we had Ten questions to answer every week, 2-3 questions for each chapter, there were 20 chapters in this book. Before we read the book and answered questions we had to make predictions about who the characters, where the setting was and what the plot was then we had to create an Ai character of any character in the book and what we think they would look like.

Here is my slide.

What book would you read if these were your options?

All Souls and Saints day

Kia ora! Welcome back to another blog post.

1 week ago it was All Saint’s and Soul’s day. It is a day where one day they honor all the Saints and the next day they honor all the Souls.

On November 1st it is all Saint’s day which means that day people from different countries with different cultures and different rel celebrate and honor the Saint’s, I know that some people Christian people in the Philippines go to cemeteries, put candles, clean and pray.

On November 2nd a day after All Saints is All Souls day, it is like All Saints day but we honor all the Souls. I know in Mexico they visit cemeteries, they have special gatherings, dress up in costumes, on the graves they put candles and colourful paper.

We had 2 create tasks to do, the first one is about all Saints day we had to research a Saint and I picked St Joseph then we made a fact file. The second task that we had to do was research a country that celebrated All Souls day.

What does your family do on these days?

Picture book planning

Kia ora! Welcome back to this weeks blog post.

Our Goals are to

  • Plan effectively, where appropriate, using a variety of strategies.
  • Understand the purposes for writing and how to achieve those purposes.

For the past 2 weeks in writing we have been learning about how to make a picture book to read for younger kids. In our class we talked about: what a picture book needs and how it will entertain the young readers.

A picture book is a book for kids and they are fictional stories which are stories that aren’t real. There are multiple steps on what a picture book needs, they need to have a setting where this is all happening, a problem that leads to the climax, the exciting bit which is the climax, how they are going to solve the problem and a solution. Picture books not only need those but they also need to have characters kids want like: Mermaids, Fairy’s, animals  etc.

Our task was to fill in a plan on what a picture book needs, it includes the setting, rising action, climax and solution, on the side there is also a vocabulary list which is what my picture book will include.

What else does a picture book need?

The Dark side of Olympic Doping

Kia ora! This Term we have focused on Podcasting. We got the option 2 options it was either imovie or podcast and I chose podcast. In our podcast our main focus was on the Olympics.

For podcasting we had some people come in to teach us about it, we had three sessions and in these sessions we learnt about what we need and what we need to do on the podcast, I learnt that there is a lot of equipment you need in order for the podcast to be good.

For PBL we had to create a podcast about the Olympics and a specific topic we chose Doping because it was a very big part of the Olympics. In my group I had Shyanne, Calystah and Regina, we made a script and used Canva to create our podcast and we named it ‘The Dark Side of Olympics Doping’

What do you know about Olympic Doping?

History of Racism

Kia ora!

This week for PBL and Reading we have been learning about the history of Racism in the Olympics. We have been reading specifically about Jesse Owens. Jesse Owens is an athlete who competed in the Germany 1936 Olympics, he was an African American who was black, at this time WW2 was happening and since he was in Germany Berlin it wasn’t a good time to be in Germany.

Jesse Owen won four gold medals and when he went back to the US he was going to the White House and wasn’t allowed to go through the main door he had to go through the door servants went, Jesse Owen couldn’t even find a proper job because of his race he ended up being a gas station employee and a playground cleaner.

How do you feel about this?

Lisa Adams – Paralympics

Kia ora! It’s been a while since I have posted a blog post.

This term we have been learning about the Olympics, a few weeks ago we read about the ancient and modern Olympics but this week we are more focused on the Paralympics, we are learning about when it started, why it started and the athletes that are in it.

We have slides that we have to fill out throughout the week while we read about the Paralympics. Something new that I learnt about the Paralympics is that it started right after World War 2 because when the war was over there were  a lot of disabled people.

Our create task this week was to pick an athlete that was in the Paralympics and create some sort of device that will help them during the Paralympics. I chose Lisa Adams, she is a Shot Putter and Discus thrower. She was diagnosed with left leg hemiplegia which means she is paralyzed in her left leg, even though throwers use there arms they still need there legs for power so I created a device for her leg.

This is my create task

Olympic Timeline

Kia ora! Welcome back to another blog post this week we have 2 reading goals: Make connections between texts, using more sophisticated texts and identify some text events and features, and discuss what they make the reader think about.

This week for reading we have been learning about the Modern and Ancient Olympics, but more of the Modern Olympics because we wanted to see the difference between now and the modern times.

For our create task we have to make a timeline about the Olympics, so I did mine on the Modern Olympics there are 6 pieces of information on the timeline that happened in the modern times.

Here’s my work

Do you anything about Modern Olympics?

Ancient Olympics

Kia ora! This week I will be blogging about what I imagine it would be like in the Ancient Olympics.

This week for reading, our hub has been learning and reading about the Ancient Olympics especially how different it was from now and back then.

The Ancient Olympics started in 776 BC (Before Christ) and ended in 393 AD (After Death). A lot has happened since then. In the track races they had to wear armor and carry a shield, for long jump they had to carry weights and they couldn’t run up and people  didn’t wear any clothes at all while competing.

Our create task is to imagine what it would: look, Taste, feel, hear, smell and feel. So after all the readings we have read we had to use our imagination and think of all those senses then we have to write a mini paragraph of what we thought in the moment.

How would you feel if you were in the Ancient Olympics?
